Final Edit - Title Sequence

This is the final edit of our title sequence, we have made some improvements on the sound and changed some of the titles around.

Editing

Today was my last day of editing. I had all the footage which was collected over 15 filming days and I sat down for exactly 8 hours editing. As editor, I feel as if I've come a long way. This would be factors such as learning how to key frame. I didn't know how to key frame so I had to go on YouTube and learn from there. Which is one of the reasons why editing took so long. Key framing is just one of the many factors I learnt on Final Cut Pro X. Factors such as using motion and applying to final cut pro. Also, the footage wasn't as long as the music so I had to edit the music as well.
To conclude,  I really enjoyed editing on Final Cut Pro X and I know that I can still improve on my editing skills.

Final thoughts

I feel as if I have come a long way throughout the planning of our title sequence. We worked well as a team although we still had times where we could have put more effort in. Although I was assigned as the editor of the group, I still took part in filming and director. The same thing went for my group mates as they also edited some of the clips. We  only had a a couple of hours to edit together as a group. however, we also had other lessons to focus on so we couldn't work as a team as much. To come against this problem, we made a group chat where would help each other out. I believe that this group chat was very helpful, especially during the half term as I would send a video of the footage I edited on Final Cut Pro and get their opinion on it. It is clear to notice that our title sequence is short, however, I believe that we done a great job in conveying what our film is about. We asked a couple students from our film and all of them were able to guess what the film was about.

Feedback to our second edit

https://soundcloud.com/user-290592604/a-feedback-from-a-stranger-to-our-2nd-draft-of-our-title-sequence

Here is a feedback from a stranger which I asked on my street. To summarise, she said that she couldn't understand what was going on and said that she wouldn't go to the film.  What's interesting about this, is that we were expecting the response of a female audience to say that she wouldn't be attending to the film. She said that football films "aren't really her thing". I believe that this answer proves that our target demographic are male audiences.

Title Sequence draft 2

This is our second edit of our title sequence. I made changes on the music as well as this, we decided that the footage in this clip will be the order of how it goes. Future changes will possibly be made on the title fonts and the music.

Feedback from class

This is the feedback that was given to us by our classmates. The main critiscism we got was how the sequence lacked narrative. We intend to develop this in the future

First edit of title sequence

This is our first edit of our title sequence, weve only got 30 seconds of footage but the video is over 2 minutes long to show the rest of the music

Question 7

For question 7, we recorded the answer and put it up on sound cloud. We felt our opinion to this question was the same which is why we decided to record it as a group.

https://soundcloud.com/tolani-onanuga/evaluation-pt1

To add on top of this, I believe that there were a lot more changes between the two tasks. Looking back at the preliminary task, we have indeed come a long way. Back then, we were not taught about the camera angles and what each angle represents. Our teacher wanted us to use a couple of shots such as the match on action and over the shoulder shots. However, we didn't really know what they were meant for. I believe that through learning the angle meanings in lessons, we were able to produce better quality footage. In addition to this, all of us had separate tasks in the preliminary tasks, whereas in our title sequence, every member of our group was able to do every job. For example, I was main editor, but this didn't stop me from filming and being the director. I believe that this is a good thing as it taught me what every role felt like.

Question 6

We also decided that we should answer Q.6 as a group as we thought this would be a better option.

Question 5

Question 4

https://soundcloud.com/user-290592604/audience

This is a voice note to my answer to question 4. I talk about the target audience for our film.

Question 3

We answered this question as a group and filmed us individually by giving our own opinion to the same question. To edit this video, I used IMovie. Whilst editing I had to research how to use IMovie to edit the green screen to put our titles on it.

To add onto our response to this question, I believe I should talk more about the distribution of our media product. As we are an independent film, our film will be distributed horizontally. This is because we can not afford to distribute it ourselves. One way in we can do this is by renting out our film on ITunes for a week before it is released in the cinemas. The reason being is to show the audience what our film is like, and for those who like it, through word of mouth they can create buzz which means that the target audience will attend and watch the film in the cinemas. Linking to what Tolani said about the film festivals, we can show our film in some of the film festivals to the people who attend.
Another way would be by radio. We can distribute our film successfully as people who listen to BBC radio will hear about our film. This Is free advertisement as BBC are funded by our T.V license. We believe that this will be successful because mostly dads listen to the radio and therefore, if they have a son, it would be a nice time out for the,.

Question 2

https://soundcloud.com/user-290592604/socialgroups

In this sound cloud i explain how our media product represents particular social groups. To summarise younger Jack is represented as a working class citizen by living in a single parent household which is the result of Jacks dad  leaving him when he was young. But as mentioned in the sound cloud, our aim isn't to represent working class citizens as poor people. In fact, we show that Jack goes up to social ladder when he becomes a footballer and starts earning more money.

Question 1

Firstly, I believe that our media product, The Journey, follows the forms and conventions of its genre. The main convention of a sports drama, would be the following;
  • A sporting event/ or a very big game
  • A sport athlete
  • Equilibrium
  • Disruption
  • Resolution
  • Success
In terms of a sporting event, our title sequence is more of a prologue which brings up the narrative for the beginning of the film. However within the plot of the film, Jack does have a big game which is the game of the film which will determine whether or not Totteham wins the league. We believe that this is what is expected in a sports film. Comparing it to other films, Goal Trilogy has a big game in every movie they have made. The same goes for Creed as his last fight would be his most important way.
We didn't have a problem in adapting Jack as an Athlete as he already plays football In his leisure time. We believe that we followed the forms and conventions, but once again, we didn't show this in the sequence although the audience could tell by looking at his body and legs. It is conventional of a sports film to have a fit and sporty athlete in it because that is what is expected. Especially as a football film, our protagonist suits this very well.

Many sports film include a utopian view of the world which is where whoever works hard and determined, and plays by the rules will succeed. our media product achieves this as we scenes throughout our media product where we see footages of younger Jack compared to him now. For example, the scene where he is doing only a few kick ups where as it transitions into the next clip older Jack is able to do it a lot more easier. However, some may disagree with the utopian perspective of life because of how a person social class may be a cutting edge to this.

The music of our media product follows the forms and conventions of the sports genre because of how it starts of with an upbeat music and carries on for most of the clip, this then leads onto to a slower piano type soundtrack as it would be an emotional moment for Jack as his hard work would have paid off. This is similar to the Utopian view.

We used the conventions of using the same angle in some of our clips. This Is because we wanted to show how the younger Jack developed to become the older Jack. We felt as if this would have explained to the audience that Jack has changed. We followed the forms and conventions for the sports genre because of how it was edited. For example, instead of using jump cut, I added a transition to show the audience that it is the same person but from the future. This technique can also be done looking into the past, but instead of using the blend together transition, we would use the white transition because it connotes a sense of flashback.

Evaluation Questions

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

3.What kind of media institutions might distribute your product and why?

4. Who would be the audience for your media product

5. How did you attract/address your audience

6.What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Filming Day 14

Today, myself and Jack got a train to White Hart Lane which is the home of Tottenham Hotspur. The reason behind this was to get some footage of Jack around the ground. We also managed to get an over the shoulder shot of Jack looking up to the poster of some Tottenham Players. We did this to show the audience that Jack has signed for his boyhood club. The equipment we took with us were a tripod and a camera.

Filming Day 13

It has been hard to come together as a group due to it being a half term break. However Kallum and I found time to come together to film Josh's football kit just to create a sense of Narrative. Jack couldn't make it but we also got him to film his own Tottenham kit so that when I edit the footage I can transition the two together to create a sense of narrative. The angle of the shot was hard to get as we put the tripod over the kit to get the whole shot. However we had some problems as we didn't realise that the legs of the tripod was also in the shot. To over come this problem, Kallum, our cinematographer suggested to slightly zoom in. This helped which came out with some good footage.
Later that night, I made my very own news paper article which depicts a head line about Jack. It talks about how some major clubs are interested in Jack. I thought this would be a nice idea and to have 2 of these articles. One which goes before Jack signs and one where he signs. This is to give the audience a sense of narrative.

Filming Day 12

We had finished filming all the stuff in school and the rest of the footage needed had to be done outside of school. We needed to establish more of a narrative. This is why today me and the group done some green screen filming. The reason as to why we used the green screen is to add the title sequence behind it to make our blogs look attractive. At first we wanted to film our selves as a group but we decided that there wouldn't be enough space for the sequence on the green screen which is why we switched to singular. We used a camera and a tripod to film ourselves answering some of the evaluation questions. The question we answered was Q.3 - What kind of media institutions would distribute your product and why?

Filming Day 11

While discussing as to what else we could film, i came up with the idea of filming Josh and Jack both doing kick ups. My group and the teacher thought this was a good idea as we needed more footage to transition between each other. Over the weekend Kallum took the camera and tripod home to film his brother doing the kick ups. We also got to film Jack at the same time. The main purpose behind this is because we wanted to establish some further background knowledge of younger Jack's story. This was also done by Kallum filming his little brother watching a football game to show the audience that he enjoy watching football.

Filming Day 10

Today I took the camera and tripod home to film some little props I had which related to football. This was done in my room and I added more lighting to get the best footage possible. As well as this i drew what would be a little kids drawings on a scrapbook because we had some criticism from our class mates because our sequence lacked narrative. I believed that this would help establish this.

Filming Day 9

Today, Me, Kallum and Jack went to film Jack whilst he was playing football. However, one problem we faced was that the camera lenses was only suitable for short range filming which wasn't suitable as Jack was playing on the other side of the film. As well as this, Jack went through a serious injury within the game which was when I stopped filming to see how he was getting on. Luckily nothing major happened to his nose except that it swelled up a bit. This injury meant that we would have to wait a couple weeks before we film Jack again.
On the same day, Kallums mum went to film Josh whilst he was playing football as well. However, she needed permission from all of the kids parents which she couldn't get because not every parent was there. We faced the same problems when we wanted to film a younger jack from school but the P.E department didn't let us because of parental consent. This definitely slowed down our filming process by quite a bit. Which is why we have decided to answer the evaluation questions a bit earlier than expected.

Filming day 8

Filming days are getting very intense and repetitive recently. Today, as a group we went to the dance changing rooms to film Jack walking up to his football kit alongside with other football kits around him. The main purpose of this footage is to establish a setting and to tell the audience that Jack had made it. One problem we faced was where to get the kits from. Luckily, P.E was wiling to lend the school football teams kits.

Filming Day 7

As the cinematographer of our group, Kallum took the camera and tri-pod home to film his brother. As mentioned before, me and my group believe that having footage of both Jack and Josh (Kallums brother) will create a sense of narrative in which we believe we are lacking. The footage that Kallum took this time is Josh dribbling but the difference to the last time we filmed Josh dribbling is that he is now adding skills to it. We believe that will explain a nice sense of narrative as this time he has improved from last time.

Soundtrack

We had 2 people In charge of sound, Jack and Kallum. They both spent a an hour searching for the right soundtrack. As  a group we wanted something inspirational or even motivational because we believed that this suited our genre. Before Jack and Kallum started looking, Jack suggested The xx - intro. After listening to it, as a group we liked and approved. However, our teacher said we couldn't use it because of copyright policies so we had to look for another one.

Not long after looking Kallum and Jack found the right soundtrack which was liked by everyone in the class including the teacher.

Editing on Final Cut

We've still got some more footage to take. Meanwhile, me and my team are working on editing. We have discussed and decided where some of the titles should be placed and whether or not some of the fonts should stay the same. Only recently I started editing with my group and I regret not doing it since our filming journey began. The reason behind this is because I get new ideas and suggestions from them which is good for our title sequence. As well as this, we discussed which footage we would keep and which footage we will remove from the task bar on final cut.

Another very important thing I learned today was how to use motion. Our Mac tech Gerry taught me and the other editors from other groups how to use it. Motion is a title editing software in which we be more creative with our titles and add more effects etc. Of course I couldn't learn it all in one lesson which is why I went home and learned more by watching videos from YouTube . Once I make titles on motion I can transfer this over to Final Cut and apply it to our footage.

Editing

Today, as a group we were putting together some off the footage we had on hand. Although it wasn't much we tried to play around and get used to Final Cut Pro as much as possible. Having experience from before, I knew what I was doing, which is why I was teaching Tolani how to edit. These included factors such as adding transitions on to the clips etc. Another factor that we discussed as a group today was the positioning of titles within the footage, in addition to what colour it should be. We had already decided the font we wanted so we went along with that. So far we've only got a 30 second footage with not much editing. Tomorrow I will go into the Mac room and edit as much as I can and get feedback from my class mates to make improvements on it.

Filming Day 6

Today me and Jack went over to the drama studio. Our cinematographer, Kallum & our director, Tolani couldn't make it. I took on the role as cinematographer while Jack played the part in the footage. The part of the filming session, I filmed Jack walking into the changing rooms which was a close up shot of Jacks feet. In the near future, Kallum will also film his brother doing the same thing to show transition of Jack through the years. As well as this, I filmed Jack taking his football kit out of the bag and taking out the new Tottenham kit as a result of him signing a new contract.

Release Date

Release Date

We have chosen the release date for our film to be Friday 14th of April because its is during the easter Holidays and therefore this will mean kids are off school so we hope that this will increase the gross overall and the gross during the opening weekend.

Director

Director
The director of our film is Frank Darabont. We chose this director because he has proven himself as a very successful director with directing films and series such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead (2010-2011). His success in drama was vital  to us because that is the main genre of our film and some of his other works have been with films with small budgets. His success with films and series with different sub genres also attracted us to use him because it proves that he is not limited in one sub genre and is flexible.

Budget

Budget

The budget for our film is £3,500,000. We believe that it is suitable amount in order to make a successful film and our target in the opening weekend is £1,500,000 and we hope the final total gross to be £4,000,000-£4,500,000. We hope our multiple production companies will market our film successfully as well as organizing for our film to feature in at least two film festivals, which would hopefully lead to a positive critic reception and nominations for awards.  A similar film to ours is Bend It Like Beckham. It is an independent, British and a sports drama as it shows the struggle of an Indian girls dream to become a footballer but is held back because of her traditional culture. This film also had a low budget, which was only around £6 million.

Audience Profile

Audience Profile

As a football film, the target audience of the movie will be young male teenagers. The main reason being that most teenagers play football and always dream of becoming a footballer. Teenagers will be the primary audience as well as football fans. I would argue that the secondary audience of our film will be young adults. This is because the films' sub genre is drama, so they will take the film a bit more seriously compared to young teenagers who would mainly attend to the film because of its sports genre. I also believe that the secondary audience of this film would be young adults because some of the issues in the film could be similar to the things those people are currently going through/have gone through and thy cn relate to the character in the film.

Our film fits in the genre of a drama and it fits under the sub genre of sport. We believe that it is a drama because the film includes scenes that focuses on issues such as single parenting, lack of financial support and bullying. Filming day 5

Today we went to the Goals at Bexleyheath where we previously filmed Josh shooting on filming day 1. Me, Jack and Kallum were the ones who attended. We used Kallum as the cinematographer and myself as the goalkeeper and Jack as the person who shoots at the goal. The main difference between what we filmed last time and now was that we brought 2 cameras and tripods instead of 1. The reason behind this is because we wanted to get the same shot, but from 2 different angles. We were thinking that we could transition these two shots together while I edit to come out with something creative. The same day, but in school, Kallum, Jack and Tolani filmed Jack walking into the changing room. This was a tricky shot to take because the camera lost focus on Jacks feet as he was walking away from the camera. To solve this problem we realised that when we film again, we need to change the focus on the camera onto auto focus.

Monday 13 March 2017

Filming Day 4

As we needed more footage, I decided that I should film the changing rooms of our school. This is mainly to establish a setting. Me and my friends believed that the school changing rooms was a perfect place to film as it resembles a football changing room. However, we also believed that if we filmed it with all the school clothes in it, it would tell a narrative that the younger Jack was in school. We haven't decided as to how we will transition this scene into a better/another changing room, but we are thinking about using Jacks current football team, Abbeymead. The changing room that we have filmed is muddy and dirty which connotes the inadequate upbringing of the younger Jack. I also wanted to film the children running into the changing rooms, however, due to the fact that the kids had no permission from their parents, we had no right to film them. We would've used that shot to show how children at Jacks school secluded him as a child.

Roles Within the team

Today we all decided what each of us in the group will be doing. During this process, we had to talk to each other thoroughly as some roles took more responsibility and effort than others. I took on the role of editor as most of the work will be done on the Macs, and I feel comfortable using them. Also, I edited our preliminary work which our teacher gave a positive note on the editing. Kallum took on the role of cinematographer and sound. Kallum showed good use of camera work when we were filming the preliminary sequence and the team believed that he was the right man for the role. As Jack was going to play the main character in the sequence, we decided that he should be in charge of the Mise En Scene. He had the right props and having done media in GCSE's we believe that Jack would know how to set a scene while filming. Likewise, we decided that Tolani should be the director. This is mainly because she done media in GCSE's  and therefore would know what we should do throughout the year. This means where we should film, how to act while filming, What to film etc.. There are also other factors such as sound and font selections. We as a team believe that this should be a team decision and not a personal one. Mainly because we don't want tension within the group and the more knowledge will help deciding the right decisions

Friday 10 March 2017

Filming Day 3

Today me and Kallum were not available to film so Tolani and Jack took on the role. The scene that we were planning to film was Jack signing the contract. The purpose behind this was because we wanted a younger Jack to also sign a contract so we can add a transition between the two scenes. Tolani & Jack went decided to go to the ibrary to film, although it may have been a good idea, when we looked back at it as a team, we decided that it wasn't the best place to film. This is because we can see the white boards and all the book a ibrary will have.

The lighting was really bad as well, this could've have been avoided, however as Tolani was our back up camera man she didn't know how to turn auto lighting on. To prevent this from happening again we decided that we should go through and help one another when using equipment, or even film all together. Because of these problems, we decided to film the same scene again, but this time using better lighting equipment. Also instead of match on action it would be an over the shoulder shot as we believe that the transition between the clips would be easier to edit.
